Ralph Schatzki has taught basic math, pre-calculus, algebra, and geometry, as well as trigonometry and statistics.
Referred to as "Mr.Ralph" at Ruamruedee Internatioal School Bangkok, a prestigious school where he taught for many years, he prides himself in being able to identify areas on which students need improvement and in giving them the tools they need to succeed at math.
Ever since I can remember, I have been good with numbers. My elementary school teachers would often give several students in my classes problems to see who would be the first to get the correct answer. I was almost always the winner, though I remember one occasion where several of us were at the board racing, and I was narrowly defeated by a classmate. The entire class was so impressed that I had been beaten, it gave her a standing ovation!
Even now, I occupy myself from time to time with numbers. One of the games I play in my head involves combining the numbers in license plates or phone numbers to obtain high scores. Suffice it to say, I have a lifelong love for numbers. In a world of so much uncertainty, I love their absolute beauty in their neatness and unbending adherence to rules.
Of course, this love led very naturally to a love for mathematics. Not only does math utilize numbers extensively, but it, too, is a highly structured, rules-based discipline.
It probably comes as no surprise, then, that I became a teacher of mathematics. As such, I have always tried to instill in each of my students the appreciation of, if not the love for, the beauty of math. I am thrilled when I can help a student understand a mathematical concept and see the light bulb go on in his head. In fact, it never fails to give me goosebumps. He may not appreciate the idea as much as I do (although he well might), but he knows very well he has overcome an obstacle and learned something that is true. As a teacher, there is no better feeling.
Having both the love for math and the experience borne out of many years teaching the subject, I have a well-developed aptitude in understanding not only what errors my students make, but also why they make them. This enables me to provide various approaches depending upon each student's unique circumstances and abilities, all of which lead to greater success.
Do not be terrified of numbers. With my guidance you will come to terms with them.
I am available to teach both in person and via skype. Please contact me for details.
